Dr. Luigino Santecchia graduated from the Catholic University of Sacred Hart – Policlinico Gemelli in Rome in 1990. Postgraduate in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1995. Since 1995 interested in dealing with Congenital Malformations, Craniofacial Surgery, Vascular Anomalies, Microsurgery, and Surgery of the Hand. First experiences on pediatric hand and microsurgery in Brescia with Prof. Giorgio Brunelli and later with Prof Alain Gilbert and Pierluigi Raimondi at the School of Surgery at Rue Fer a Muline in Paris.
Dr. Santecchia started attending the Pius Branzeu for flap surgery and microsurgery first with basic courses until I was a tutor, then courses on perforating flaps. At Pius Branzeu he had his microsurgery training ground where I met my mentors Prof. Georgescu and Prof. Lucian Jiga who encouraged him to continue with experimental microsurgery. But there he also had the opportunity to meet masters from all over the world, with whom he shared many subsequent experiences. He attended several courses in advanced microsurgery in the following years, combined with practice in his hospital dealing with hand and foot reconstructions and head and neck reconstruction, up to being Tutor at the Oldenburg-Groningen International Course on perforating flaps. He obtained a fellowship in microsurgery and lymphatic surgery at China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan, he was the former Chief of Paediatric Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery at the Rome site until 2020. Over the past five years, he has had the opportunity to work with Prof. Jones and his team on the pediatric hand, which is still his highest-profile point of reference in this field.

In June 2020, he migrated to the Palidoro site always in Vatican City, to activate a Multidisciplinary Hand Surgery, Orthoplasty, and Rehabilitation Centre under his own Direction. Last but not least, the concrete contribution to the project by an association of parents of children with congenital and traumatic amputations called the Energy Family Project (around 650 families active throughout Italy and Europe – www.energyfamilyproject.org), with whom we have established an official collaboration with the hospital.
